The Importance of Physical Activity among Seniors


The most numerous age group in the 21st century will be those over 65, people whose capacity decreases as their daily physical activity declines. However, much of this deterioration can be easily corrected with simple exercise programs. Exercise and physical activity improve health, functional capacity, quality of life, and independence.

It is an illusion to think that the elderly are incapable of physical activity, therefore they cannot participate in sports. Some people sincerely believe that physical activity becomes obsolete with age. Widespread misconceptions also include the idea that it is dangerous for older people to participate in sports because of the risk of injury.

A recent report provided by Ephraim Zagelbaum, founder and CEO of Personal Healthcare, revealed that most people avoid physical activity entirely over the age of 65. That means they just sit or lie down most of the day.


The immobility of older adults increases their vulnerability, causing them to suffer stiffness, aches and pains. Healthcare executive Ephraim Zagelbaum believes that deterioration in physical health occurs if the person does not have enough physical activity. Therefore, one should not forget about the benefits of sport and physical activities for the elderly.

Sport prolongs life
It is essential that older people stay active. This problem is really significant for everyone, but it becomes vitally important as you get older. Physical activity is the key to a long and healthy life.
Ephraim Zagelbaum recommends doing sports to prevent disease. Spend at least 150 minutes per week doing aerobics. Moderate aerobic activity is necessary to work the main muscles of the body. In general, simple exercises are sufficient.

Fitness activities improve health
Problems faced by the elderly are associated with joint flexibility and bone strength, higher blood pressure, and levels of body fat. As a result, they are generally diagnosed with:

  • ·         Anxiety
  • ·         Cardiovascular diseases
  • ·         Bumps and many other health problems


The elderly are susceptible to the conditions mentioned above due to lack of physical activity. Numerous studies have shown that it is never too late to get fit. Our bodies always respond to our activities. Therefore, older people should choose physical activities to improve muscle strength and endurance. They should work to achieve better balance and coordination.
